If you’re looking for nothing but electric guitars and power cords, Moogfest, to be held May 19-22 in downtown Durham, N.C., probably isn’t the place to be. After all, Moogfest is an electronic music festival created as a tribute to Dr. Robert Moog, the inventor of the revolutionary Moog Synthesizer.
But if you’re interested in the most cutting-edge artists and envelope-pushing jams around, well, Moogfest most definitely IS the place to be. Grimes, Explosions In The Sky and Miike Snow are some of the headliners, but with nearly 90 acts even the most hardcore music fan will be challenged to not find something new. Here are some of Blooperman’s favorites from this year’s lineup – so far. If nothing else, do yourself a favor and listen to YACHT’s “Tripped and Fell In Love,” a synth-driven, booty-shaking classic of simmering tension buried deep on the duo’s 2011 album, Shangri-La.
Oh, and remember that part about electric guitars up there? Let’s be clear: “Nothing but” isn’t the same as “won’t be any.” Daniel Lanois has produced everything from U2 to Willie Nelson albums, and he knows his way around a six string, as you can hear above. And few people who attended Moogest 2011 in Asheville, N.C., will forget St. Vincent’s jaw-dropping axe-wielding skills during her set at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium. But don’t take our word for it:
Finally, Grimes is awesome. We can’t wait to see Grimes.
Did we mention Grimes is awesome?
